R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Adlai Travis Mast, Jr., of Nacogdoches, died on
December 4, 2002, at the age of 81, and his passing has deeply
saddened his family and many friends throughout the community; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Mast was born on January 14, 1921, in
Nacogdoches; he acquired his early education from local schools,
Riverside Military Academy in Georgia and Florida, and Episcopal
High School in Alexandria, Virginia; he then studied at Stephen F.
Austin State University and The University of Texas at Austin,
where he belonged to the Sigma Nu fraternity, and he also served as
a pilot with the British Royal Air Force and the United States Army
Air Corps; and
WHEREAS, A rancher in Texas and New Mexico, Mr. Mast
contributed his time and energy to a wide spectrum of professional
entities; he was president of the Fredonia Hotel and Convention
Center Corporation, Piney Woods Architectural Preservation, Inc.,
the Nacogdoches Farm and Ranch Association, and the Nacogdoches
Horse Show Association, and served as director of Regions-Stone
Fort Bank and Trawick Royalty Owners; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Mast, a fourth-generation East Texan, showed a
deep commitment to his hometown through his dedication to
preserving historic Nacogdoches; his efforts resulted in the
restoration of the Cotton Exchange Building, the Mayer-Schmidt
Building, and the Jones House on Church Street; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan also faithfully supported
Stephen F. Austin State University; he was a member of the advisory
board for the SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center and established
the SFA Mast Arboretum; and
WHEREAS, Numerous young people benefited from his guidance
as a Boy Scout troop leader and from his experienced leadership as a
member of the board of trustees of St. Stephen's Episcopal School in
Austin; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Mast was a devout congregant of Christ Episcopal
Church; he served as a vestryman and Sunday school teacher and led
initiatives to create an addition to the church building and to
install a pipe organ; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of his valuable contributions to his
community, Mr. Mast was honored as Nacogdoches Chamber of Commerce
Citizen of the Year and was named one of the four most influential
people in Nacogdoches and Angelina counties; and
WHEREAS, A devoted husband and father, Mr. Mast lived his
life motivated by a sense of responsibility to his family, church,
and community; he made a positive difference in the lives of his
fellow citizens, and his absence is widely mourned; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Adlai Travis Mast,
Jr., and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to
his wife, Patricia Roberdeau Mast; to his children and their
spouses, Travis and Lupe Mast III, Tricia and Kenn George, and John
and Karen Mast; to his grandchildren, Sidney, Helen, Adlai,
Margaret, Kenneth, Patrick, Clement, Elizabeth, Horace, and
Joseph; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House
of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Adlai
Travis Mast, Jr.
