R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Many proud residents of Angelina County are joining us on this day in celebration of Angelina County Day at the State Capitol; and WHEREAS, Located amid the lush forests and rolling hills of East Texas, Angelina County is bounded on the north by the Angelina River and on the south by the Neches River; and WHEREAS, The county was organized in 1846 and was named for Angelina, the Indian maiden whose name means "Little Angel" and who is said to have aided Spanish missionaries in the region around 1690; and WHEREAS, Although Angelina County enjoys a strong and diversified economic base, the region has benefited most through the years from a thriving lumber industry, and since the arrival of railroad access in the 1880s it has been a national hub of timber and forest products; in recent times the county has seen growth in manufacturing and is home to many national commodities; and WHEREAS, Lufkin, which serves as the county seat, features a variety of popular attractions, such as the Texas Forestry Museum, the Lufkin Historical and Creative Arts Center, the Museum of East Texas, and the Ellen Trout Zoo; and WHEREAS, An attractive destination for outdoor enthusiasts, Angelina County contains the region's largest lake, the Sam Rayburn Reservoir, which offers ample opportunities for fishing, swimming, and boating, and the Angelina National Forest, a favorite weekend getaway for nature lovers; and WHEREAS, Rich in natural and cultural resources as well as an industrious and forward-looking citizenry, Angelina County is a credit to the Lone Star State, and it gives the members of this chamber great pleasure to honor the history and contributions of this fine Texas county; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby honor Angelina County residents at the State Capitol and welcome the delegation from the Angelina County Chamber of Commerce and Leadership Lufkin Class of 2003 to the house chamber.
