R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Many proud South Texans are visiting Austin on February 12, 2003, to celebrate Jim Wells County Day at the State Capitol, and this festive event offers an ideal opportunity to acknowledge the role of this region in the state's unparalleled historic narrative; and WHEREAS, Created by the Texas Legislature in 1911 from part of Nueces County, Jim Wells County is named for James B. Wells, Jr., notable for his pivotal role in South Texas politics and land development; and WHEREAS, Alice, the county seat, was established in 1886 and at one time reportedly shipped more cattle than any other place in the world; considered the "Hub of South Texas" for its location at the crossroads of State Highway 44 and U.S. Highway 281, Alice is situated along the Texas Tropical Trail at the geographical heart of South Texas; the city and surrounding county also sit astride major trade routes between the Port of Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande Valley, with Highway 281 designated as a vital link in the NAFTA Superhighway System; and WHEREAS, Buoyed by the cattle industry since the 1800s, when the Chisholm Trail passed through the county, the local economy relies as well on other forms of agribusiness and on oil and gas production; and WHEREAS, A glimpse into the past and a better understanding of the region can be had by touring the South Texas Museum, a Texas Historical Landmark located in the former ranch headquarters of the McGill family; local recreational and leisure pursuits include traditional fiestas, rodeos, and county fairs, in addition to hunting and water sports; and WHEREAS, Residents of Jim Wells County look with justifiable pride on their community's past, yet they are also eager to embrace the challenges and opportunities of the years to come, and it gives the members of this chamber great pleasure to salute this fine Texas county; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby recognize February 12, 2003, as Jim Wells County Day at the State Capitol and extend warmest best wishes to all the county's citizens on this noteworthy occasion.
