R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Residents of San Angelo lost an esteemed businessman and community leader with the passing of the Reverend Quinton H. Blackmon on October 31, 2002; and WHEREAS, An Arkansas native, Reverend Blackmon was born in Morrillton on March 24, 1932, and after receiving his early education in the state's public school system, he went on to attend Morris Booker College in Dermott, Arkansas; and WHEREAS, In 1952, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and completed tours of duty in Korea, Japan, Germany, and across the U.S. before retiring from Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo in 1973; and WHEREAS, On completing his military service, Reverend Blackmon earned his teacher's certification from Southwest Texas State University and took a position as an educator at Central High School, retiring from San Angelo Independent School District in 1996; and WHEREAS, Reverend Blackmon was a successful business owner for more than three decades as well as a widely respected minister; he was ordained in 1978 and held pastoral positions at St. Luke Baptist Church in Eldorado and the 17th Street Independent Methodist Episcopal Church before founding Greater San Angelo Independent Methodist Episcopal Church, where he ministered for 12 years; and WHEREAS, Quinton Blackmon was a man of integrity, dedication, and strong faith, and while he is greatly missed, his spirit lives on in the hearts and minds of the many people whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Quinton H. Blackmon and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife of 46 years, Hazel L. Blackmon; to his children, Gwendolyn Henderson, Quinton H. Blackmon, Jr., Michael Blackmon, Marsha Blackmon-Ekeh, Stacey Blackmon, and Frederick Blackmon; to his four sisters and three brothers; to his 12 grandchildren; to his surrogate son, Fredd Adams; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of the Reverend Quinton H. Blackmon.
