R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame is proud to honor
the inductees of the Class of 2003: Linus Baer, Warren McVea, John
Miles, Johnny Moore, and Demetria Sance; and
WHEREAS, This year's inductees have excelled in sports on the
high school, college, and professional levels, and their
contributions to their respective sports have earned them the
respect of their peers; and
WHEREAS, Linus Baer starred at Lee High School in the 1960s,
lettering in football, baseball, basketball, and track; he is a
part of Texas high school lore for his stellar performance in the
1963 Lee-Brackenridge playoff game, in which he scored 37 points,
rushed for 150 yards, and caught three passes for 94 yards in the
Volunteers' 55-48 victory; Mr. Baer later played college football
at The University of Texas at Austin; and
WHEREAS, Brackenridge High School alumnus Warren McVea
established several state records during his senior year, including
the records for scoring in a season and a career; in 1964 he became
the first African American to receive an athletic scholarship from
the University of Houston; this extraordinary athlete went on to
play professional football with the Cincinnati Bengals and the
Kansas City Chiefs, the team that won the Super Bowl championship in
1970; and
WHEREAS, John "Mule" Miles played baseball in the Negro
Leagues from 1946 to 1949, during which time he established himself
as one of the league's premiere long-ball hitters with the Chicago
American Giants; during his career he played against a number of
well-known greats, including Jackie Robinson, Larry Doby, and
Satchell Paige; in 1950 he became the first African American to play
for the Laredo Patches, and he later dedicated many years to
managing his own semipro team, the Miles Oilers; and
WHEREAS, San Antonio Spurs great Johnny Moore played point
guard for the team in the 1980s and still holds the franchise record
for assists; his best season came in 1984-85, when he averaged 12.8
points, 10.0 assists, and 2.79 steals; before beginning his
professional basketball career, Mr. Moore helped lead The
University of Texas to the 1978 NIT Championship; he currently
works for the Spurs as a community relations representative; and
WHEREAS, Demetria Sance led Jay High School to the state
volleyball title during her freshman year and twice earned
recognition as San Antonio volleyball player of the year; a
four-time All-American at The University of Texas at Austin, this
exceptional athlete represented her country at both the Pan
American Games and the Olympics before signing a contract to play
professional volleyball in Italy; Ms. Sance is now the volleyball
coach at Arlington Seguin High School; and
WHEREAS, Being inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of
Fame is a great honor that will undoubtedly be cherished by these
deserving inductees, and it is a privilege to join in honoring these
noteworthy athletes and to recognize their many achievements; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the San Antonio Sports Hall of
Fame's Class of 2003: Linus Baer, Warren McVea, John Miles, Johnny
Moore, and Demetria Sance; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for these individuals as an expression of high regard by
the Texas House of Representatives.
