R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The family and friends of Walter C. Pope III of
Sonora were deeply saddened by the passing of this respected
rancher and conservationist on December 23, 2002; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Pope was born in Roswell, New Mexico, and
graduated from high school in Tulsa, Oklahoma; in 1944, he became a
naval air cadet at Olathe Naval Air Station and transferred a short
time later to the United States Marine Corps; he served with
distinction in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns and participated
in the Marine Expeditionary Forces on mainland Japan before his
honorable discharge in 1946; and
WHEREAS, After his military service, Mr. Pope earned a
bachelor's degree in geology from Wichita State University and
began his career with Stanalind Gas Company in Tyler; on October
21, 1950, he married Dorothy Wilson at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in
San Angelo; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Pope owned a ranch near Ft. McKavett where he
practiced early methods of brush control and water saving, far
ahead of the modern conservation movement; in 1993, he was one of
the first area ranchers to import Boer goats from New Zealand, which
revolutionized the goat industry and complemented his own prized
herd of commercial Angus cattle; and
WHEREAS, A congregant at St. John's Episcopal Church, Mr.
Pope was a highly regarded member of his community who was active in
local affairs and served as a Sonora city alderman and Schleicher
County commissioner; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Pope made a positive impact on this world
through his example as a devoted family man, a successful rancher,
and a pioneering conservationist; his spirit will continue to live
in the hearts of the many people who were privileged to have known
him; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Walter C. Pope III and
extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
beloved wife of 52 years, Dorothy Wilson Pope; to his children,
Janet Andrews and her husband, Joe; Cora McGowan and her husband,
Wally; and Walter C. Pope IV and his wife, Carol; to his
grandchildren, Cally, Ogden, Richard, Audrey, Dorothy Anne,
Cadesman, and Julia; to his two faithful employees, Rogelio Vasquez
and Ramaiero Vasquez; and to his other relatives and many friends;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Walter C.
Pope III.
