H.R. No. 72 


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On January 31, 1968, in violation of a lunar new year truce, 80,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops launched the massive Tet Offensive, attacking 105 cities and towns throughout South Vietnam; and WHEREAS, Although taken by surprise, American troops acquitted themselves well in innumerable instances of bitter, close combat, eventually repelling the attacks and wrecking the Viet Cong as an effective fighting force; Tet cost 81,000 lives, including those of 14,300 civilians and 3,895 Americans; and WHEREAS, The Center for Military History is an organization composed of active military personnel, reservists, and veterans committed to presenting the history of America's fighting men and women through university-level symposiums, general public forums, and public high school educational programs; in addition, the center is dedicated to preserving military history through an ongoing oral history project that will serve as the foundation for future booklets that profile American veterans as role models; and WHEREAS, Members of the Center for Military History are gathering in Austin on January 30, 2003, to commemorate the 35th anniversary of what General Norman Schwarzkopf has called the major battle of the Vietnam War; and WHEREAS, The courage displayed by Tet veterans exemplifies the best qualities of the almost nine million U.S. military personnel who were involved in the Vietnam War and the general Southeast Asia conflict between 1961 and 1975; their bravery and the tremendous personal hardships they endured are truly worth remembering and are deserving of recognition by every American; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby honor American veterans of the 1968 Tet Offensive on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of that assault; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Center for Military History as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
