H.R. No. 83
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Deryl M. Hurd of Houston has been chosen to receive
an Outstanding Texan award by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus in
recognition of her many notable professional contributions in the
field of education; and
WHEREAS, The Outstanding Texan award was created to honor
individuals who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to
improving, developing, and enriching the lives of others; and
WHEREAS, Highly respected by her colleagues, Mrs. Hurd has
enjoyed a career spanning nearly three decades with the Houston
Independent School District; she has benefited young Texans through
her work in numerous capacities, including those of speech
therapist, special education teacher and supervisor, and dean of
instruction, and she brings this wealth of experience to her
current post as principal of Pleasantville Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished educator earned a bachelor's
degree in speech pathology and audiology and a master's degree in
educational leadership, both from the University of Houston; she
holds certification in speech and language therapy, language and
learning disabilities, and early childhood education for the
handicapped child; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Hurd's many professional affiliations include
the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association, of
which she is second vice president for the 2002-2003 school year;
she is also a member of the Houston Association of School
Administrators, National Association of Elementary School
Principals, Houston Educator's Exchange, and the Principals'
Leadership Academy; and
WHEREAS, In all her endeavors, Mrs. Hurd enjoys the support
of her family, including her husband, Donald, and her daughter,
Christine Nicole Mitchell; a valued member of the Church of Christ,
she enjoys spending time with her loved ones and takes pleasure in
photography, travel, arts and crafts, and reading; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Hurd's commitment to her profession has greatly
enhanced the lives of countless individuals, and it is indeed
appropriate that she receive special recognition at this time; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Deryl M. Hurd on being named an
Outstanding Texan by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and extend
to her sincere best wishes for success and happiness in her future
endeavors; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mrs. Hurd as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
