R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Elmira Cornett of Houston has been chosen to receive an Outstanding Texan award by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus in recognition of her significant service to the community; and WHEREAS, The Outstanding Texan award was created to honor individuals who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving, developing, and enriching the lives of others; and WHEREAS, A native of Louisiana, Mrs. Cornett moved to Houston at the age of two and graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School; she went on to study floral design and eventually opened a flower and gift shop as well as a confection store; and WHEREAS, In addition to being a successful entrepreneur, this visionary Texan is also a respected civic leader and volunteer; over the years, Mrs. Cornett has given generously of her time and talents in support of such noteworthy organizations as the Hobart Taylor Park advisory board, Boy Scouts of America, Friends of Target Hunger, Share the Spirit of the Texas Gulf Coast, and the Norton Church of God in Christ and the Buck Street Memorial Church of God in Christ; Mrs. Cornett is also the founder of the Joy of Awakening Youth Life Planning Center in Houston and authored and produced many plays for area youth; and WHEREAS, Named the Outstanding Black Houstonian by Magic 102, Coca-Cola, and Eastern Airlines, Mrs. Cornett has demonstrated a deeply rooted commitment to improving the quality of life for her fellow Texans, and it is a pleasure to join in honoring her on her recent achievement; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Elmira Cornett on being named an Outstanding Texan by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and extend to her sincere best wishes for success and happiness in her future endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Cornett as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
