H.R. No. 104


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Today, there are approximately three million Texans who are 60 years of age or older and it is projected that in 20 years that number will increase to more than five million; and WHEREAS, Imparting their wisdom and knowledge, these citizens reflect the state's cultural, spiritual, and ethnic diversity and make Texas a better place in which to live, work, and raise families by serving as teachers and role models for younger generations; and WHEREAS, Countless older Texans relish their role as grandparents and mentors, instilling many of the same values and principles in their grandchildren that were taught to them by their own parents and grandparents; and WHEREAS, Helping to bridge the gap between past, present, and future, senior citizens in Texas have made immeasurable contributions in such important areas as education, industry, agriculture, space exploration, information technology, music, arts, and sports; furthermore, they have ably defended our nation's freedoms so that democracy could flourish in the United States; and WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Texas has reaped the benefits of senior citizens' experience, vision, and leadership, and it is most fitting to honor these elder Texans for their numerous good works and deeds; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby recognize February 4, 2003, as Senior Day in Texas and encourage Texans to observe and celebrate the contributions of these treasured citizens with appropriate ceremonies and festivities.
