H.R. No. 106


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On this day, February 27, 2003, many proud residents of Shelby County have traveled to Austin in celebration of Shelby County Day at the State Capitol, and their visit provides a fitting opportunity to reflect on the history and contributions of their fine community; and WHEREAS, This lovely area was organized under the Mexican government as the Tenehaw Municipality; in 1836, the land was reconstituted by the Congress of the Republic of Texas as Shelby County, a tribute to Isaac Shelby, an American Revolutionary War hero, and the county's most important town, Nashville, was renamed Shelbyville; and WHEREAS, Shelby County later moved its seat to the central part of the county and renamed the existing city as Center; still the county seat more than a century later, Center is home to the Shelby County Museum and the county courthouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the only Irish castle style courthouse remaining in the nation; Shelby Junior College is also located in Center; and WHEREAS, Nestled deep in the East Texas Piney Woods, Shelby County is rich in natural resources; in addition to timber and cattle industries, the area's economy is strengthened by significant poultry production; and WHEREAS, Residents of Shelby County should take great pride in the rich history of their county, and in light of their forward-thinking citizenry, they can look ahead to a bright and promising future as well; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby recognize February 27, 2003, as Shelby County Day at the State Capitol and extend sincere best wishes to all involved for an enjoyable stay in Austin.
