R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dr. Stephen Jones has been chosen by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus to receive an Outstanding Texan Award for his many contributions to his community; and WHEREAS, The Outstanding Texan Award was created to honor individuals who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving, developing, and enriching the lives of others; and WHEREAS, Dr. Jones is pastor of Mount Sinai Baptist Church and chairman of the Division of Arts and Science at Paul Quinn College in Dallas and has a love of learning that led him to achieve the highest of academic pursuits; he has a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Bishop College, a master's degree in chemistry from Texas Southern University, and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Clark-Atlanta University, and he is currently working on a master of divinity degree at Baylor University; and WHEREAS, He is a coauthor of and served as project director for the development of CORD Biology, a science textbook, and made substantial contributions to two other textbooks that are presently used in four countries; and WHEREAS, In his pastoral experience, he has enriched the lives of many; he provided spiritual aid and comfort to those in need through his previous roles as the assistant jail ministry coordinator at Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia, and as the youth minister at both Antioch North Baptist Church and the Friends of Atlanta Homeless Ministries; and WHEREAS, Dr. Jones began his ministry under the leadership of Dr. C. A. W. Clark at the Good Street Baptist Church, where he served as an associate minister, Sunday school teacher, and assistant director of Christian education; he is currently the president of the Southeast Dallas County Ministers Alliance; and WHEREAS, Devoted to his wife Andrea and his son Joseph, Dr. Jones is a notable community leader who has committed significant time and energy to counseling those in need, and he is truly worthy of being named an Outstanding Texan; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Stephen Jones on receiving the Outstanding Texan Award from the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and extend to him sincere best wishes in all future endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Dr. Jones as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
