R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dr. Wright L. Lassiter, Jr., has been chosen by the
Texas Legislative Black Caucus to receive an Outstanding Texan
Award for his many contributions to his community; and
WHEREAS, The Outstanding Texan Award was created to honor
individuals who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to
improving, developing, and enriching the lives of others; and
WHEREAS, With a strong academic background from Alcorn State
University, Indiana University, and Auburn University, Dr.
Lassiter is currently serving as president of El Centro College in
Dallas; he previously served as president of Bishop College in
Dallas and Schenectady County Community College in New York; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lassiter has also been an educator and
administrator at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Tuskeegee
University in Alabama, Dallas Baptist University, The University of
Texas at Austin, and Texas A&M University; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished gentleman is recognized as a
leader in his community and has served on the boards of many worthy
organizations, including the Methodist Medical Center, the
Salvation Army, the YMCA Foundation, and the African American
Museum, where he is currently chairman of the board; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lassiter was honored in 1989 when President
George Bush appointed him to the U.S. Commission on Minority
Business Development and again in 2002 when President George W.
Bush nominated him for service as a member of the National Advisory
Council to the National Endowment for the Humanities; and
WHEREAS, With a list of achievements too numerous to mention,
Dr. Lassiter has justly received significant accolades throughout
the years; a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and role
model to many, this fine gentleman is truly worthy of being named an
Outstanding Texan; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Wright L. Lassiter, Jr., on being
named an Outstanding Texan by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus
and extend to him sincere best wishes in all his future endeavors;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Dr. Lassiter as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
