H.R. No. 139
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes great pride
in joining the American Heart Association, Texas Affiliate, in
recognizing February 2003 as American Heart Month; and
WHEREAS, One of the nation's leading causes of death,
cardiovascular disease claims more than 55,000 lives in Texas every
year, accounting for almost 40 percent of the state's total deaths;
and
WHEREAS, The men and women of the American Heart Association
are committed to combating this epidemic, and through a proactive
approach to detecting the disease as well as the provision of
various public information projects, they are positively impacting
the lives of countless Texans; and
WHEREAS, Some 250,000 Texas high school students will receive
training in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation this year,
and many lives will be saved because of the placement of automated
external defibrillators in state buildings and the provision of
emergency medical pre-arrival instructions; and
WHEREAS, The American Heart Association is working toward
reducing the toll of heart disease and stroke on our citizens, and
this vital endeavor is most deserving of our support; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby recognize February 2003 as American Heart Month
and commend all those associated with the American Heart
Association for their dedicated efforts in addressing this serious
health problem; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the American Heart Association, Texas Affiliate, as an
expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
