H.R. No. 144


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Residents of Brownwood lost an esteemed businessman and community leader with the passing of William "Bill" Wallace Jamar on January 11, 2003; and WHEREAS, A native of Oklahoma, Mr. Jamar was born in Tulsa on December 5, 1924, and graduated from Central High School; he served in the United States Army during World War II, and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and a European Theater Ribbon for his valor; and WHEREAS, He moved to Brownwood in the late 1940s, and over the ensuing two decades, he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Oklahoma and gained a wealth of experience working for a local radio station, KBWD; he took ownership of the station in 1970 and embarked on an impressive career as a businessman, founding KOXE FM in Brownwood in 1975; and WHEREAS, Mr. Jamar quickly established himself as a leader in the media industry, and over the years, he owned and operated 22 radio stations as well as part of various other businesses, including Brownwood Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Big Tex Outdoor Advertising, the Mineral Wells Index, the Palo Pinto Star, Paul's Valley TV Cable Vision in Oklahoma, SCAT Cable TV in Snyder, Corsicana Cable TV, and Stamford, Haskell, and Munday Cable TV; and WHEREAS, He was a member of the board of regents of North Texas State University for 12 years and served on the board of the Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom of Howard Payne University; also on the boards of various banks and KLRU-TV of Austin, Mr. Jamar was an active member of the Texas and National associations of broadcasters; and WHEREAS, In addition to his career, Mr. Jamar was dedicated to serving his community; he was vice chairman of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce, served as president of the Texas Municipal League, Heart of Texas Girl Scout Council, and the Brownwood Rotary Club, held the office of mayor pro tem of Brownwood, and was a member of the Brownwood City Council; he also served on the Brownwood Civic Improvement Foundation Committee and was chairman of the Gordon Wood Hall of Champions Committee; and WHEREAS, A devoted man of faith, Mr. Jamar was a founding member of Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Brownwood, where he served as a senior warden and member of the vestry; and WHEREAS, William Jamar was an inspiration to all who knew him, and while he will be greatly missed, his spirit lives on in the hearts and minds of the many people whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of William "Bill" Wallace Jamar and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife of 55 years, Jane Ellen Mayes Jamar; to his children and their spouses, Bonnie and Don Dillard, Lydia and Dink Foree, Shelley and Stan Carstens, and Paul and Cynthia Jamar; to his 14 grandchildren, Mitchell and William Dillard, Amy Dillard Terry, Burns and Adam Bowen, Abby, Blake, and Nicole Foree, Jonathan Newton, Julie Carstens Stanley, Bonnie Carstens Aughenbaugh, Jennifer Jamar Snyder, and Brian and Bobbie Jamar; to his four great-grandchildren; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of William "Bill" Wallace Jamar.
