H.R. No. 150


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, San Antonio's Ira Smith, Jr., has been named an Outstanding Texan by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus for his longtime dedication to supporting his community; and WHEREAS, The Outstanding Texan Award was created to honor individuals who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving, developing, and enriching the lives of others; and WHEREAS, A graduate of St. Mary's University, Mr. Smith retired from the City of San Antonio as director of central services on June 1, 1998; he holds numerous leadership positions, most notably president of 100 Black Men of San Antonio, Inc., an organization devoted to four core issues: mentoring, education, health and wellness, and economic development; and WHEREAS, Members of this organization have dedicated themselves to helping students at Martin Luther King Middle School by focusing on these four areas of development, and Mr. Smith has provided visionary leadership in that pursuit; and WHEREAS, In addition to performing his duties as president of 100 Black Men of San Antonio, Inc., Mr. Smith serves on several notable committees and boards, including the Center for Health Care Services' Board of Trustees and the Methodist Hospital Community Board; he is also chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee for Methodist Healthcare Ministries; and WHEREAS, Mr. Smith's record of volunteer service is truly remarkable; he is a former chairman of the United Way of Texas Board of Trustees, the Bexar County Mental Health/Mental Retardation Center's Board of Trustees, and the Southeast Mental Health/Mental Retardation Advisory Committee; he has also served on the Goodwill Industries Board of Trustees, the Drug Abuse Central Board of Directors, and the YMCA Board of Directors; and WHEREAS, Ira Smith, Jr., is an inspiration to all who know him, and it is a privilege to pay tribute to this River City resident and to recognize him as an Outstanding Texan; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Ira Smith, Jr., on his selection as an Outstanding Texan by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and commend him for his longtime record of public service; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
