H.R. No. 160
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The untimely passing of Charles Shannon of San
Antonio on February 3, 2003, at the age of 54 brought a great loss to
the family, friends, and colleagues of this kind and generous man,
and it is with heavy hearts that we bid him farewell; and
WHEREAS, A San Antonio native, Mr. Shannon had served as
chairman of the board of directors of VIA Metropolitan Transit
since January 2001; he was appointed to that organization's board
of trustees in 1995 and held numerous other leadership positions
during his tenure with VIA; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Shannon was affiliated with the YMCA of San
Antonio for 37 years, first as a counselor and youth leader and
later as executive director of the Davis-Scott branch and district
executive for the southern region; his efforts over the course of
nearly four decades changed countless lives and earned him the
respect and admiration of young and old alike; and
WHEREAS, He was in the U.S. Navy from 1970 to 1973 and served
in Vietnam on the USS Constellation; after his discharge he began a
10-year stint with the Texas Department of Human Resources, during
which time he began his pursuit of a degree in sociology from
Southwest Texas State University; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Shannon's exemplary record of civic service
earned him a number of accolades, including the City of San
Antonio's "Profile of a Leader for Outstanding Community Work"
award, the United African Methodist Immanuel Church's "Man of the
Year" award, and the Texas Legislative Black Caucus's "Outstanding
Texan" award; and
WHEREAS, The loss of Charles Shannon has affected a multitude
of individuals who benefited from this extraordinary man's
passionate commitment to aiding his fellow citizens, and although
he will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him, his spirit
will surely live on through his myriad good works and deeds; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Charles Shannon of San
Antonio and extend sympathy to the members of his family: to his
wife, Zelma Shannon; to his son, Eric Shannon; and to the many other
relatives and friends of this beloved man; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Charles
Shannon.
