R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, February 12, 2003, marks the 114th anniversary of the incorporation of Vernon, Texas, and this occasion provides a fitting opportunity to reflect on the storied history of this fine city; and WHEREAS, Originally called Eagle Flat because of an unusual abundance of nesting eagles, Vernon is the county seat of Wilbarger County and is situated on the gentle rolling prairies of North Texas; blessed with rich soils and abundant natural resources, the area is a center for farming and ranching as well as oil production; and WHEREAS, Visitors to the city can browse the collections of the Red River Valley Museum or reflect on days past at the W. T. Waggoner Ranch and Doan's Crossing, one of the most famous cattle crossings on the Red River; the city is also home to Vernon Regional Junior College and the Santa Rosa Palomino Club, a renowned precision equestrian riding club; and WHEREAS, A delegation from Vernon, including local officials, area business owners, and interested residents, has gathered today at the State Capitol to celebrate their city; by uniting to address the challenging issues that face their community, these men and women are building a brighter and more promising future for their city, and it is a pleasure to join in recognizing them at this time; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby recognize February 12, 2003, as Vernon Day at the State Capitol and extend to the city's delegation sincere best wishes for an enjoyable and productive visit to Austin.
