R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On October 1, 2002, men and women across the Lone Star State were deeply saddened by the loss of Bernice Green Conley, a beloved community leader and Texas native; and WHEREAS, Born in Bryan on July 2, 1926, Ms. Conley attended Bishop College and had been a loyal employee of Dallas County since 1972, serving most recently as a deputy clerk in the county clerk's office; she was also a devoted mother and grandmother and an active member of New Jerusalem Institutional Baptist Church; and WHEREAS, In addition, this esteemed woman demonstrated a great passion for helping others, which compelled her to get involved in politics on the local, state, and national levels; a delegate to the Democratic state and national conventions since 1968 and 1975, respectively, Ms. Conley served as vice president of the Dallas branches of the NAACP and the Texas Coalition of Black Democrats, and as Dallas County precinct chairperson for more than a quarter-century; and WHEREAS, For her efforts, Ms. Conley received the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Dallas County Progressive Voters League, the Outstanding Contribution and Community Service Award from the Senate of Texas, and the Civic Award from the Texas Legislative Black Caucus; she was also appointed an admiral in the Texas Navy and a Yellow Rose of Texas, and was one of the founding members of the Texas Coalition of Black Democrats; and WHEREAS, Bernice Conley was a woman of commitment and purpose, and while she will be greatly missed, her legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of the many people whose lives she touched; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Bernice Green Conley and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her children, Virgil, Jenard, Janice, Ronald, Donald, and John Bruce; to her grandchildren, Kimberly, Kelle, Jenard Scott, Christopher, Ronald, Jr., Morgan, Cameron, Terrance, Iron, and Aaron; and to her other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bernice Green Conley.
