R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The students, staff, and faculty of Lyons Elementary School in Houston are commemorating the school's 10th anniversary this year; and WHEREAS, Opened in January 1993, the school was named for the late Harris County commissioner E. A. "Squatty" Lyons, a gentleman who dedicated nearly five decades of his life to public service; today, the Lyons school community is proud to count his widow, Fern Lyons, as one of its strongest supporters; and WHEREAS, Since first opening its doors only 10 years ago, this noteworthy institution has won accolades from educators and parents alike; in addition to winning the Mayor's Award for Educational Excellence, the school has been granted Exemplary status nine times by the Houston Independent School District and has garnered nine Title I Distinguished School awards; and WHEREAS, The motto of this fine school, "Lyons Elementary ... Where Excellence is Expected," does indeed describe the remarkable talent and commitment displayed each day in the school's halls and classrooms, and those who have worked so hard to ensure the school's impressive record of success may reflect with pride on a job well done; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the students, staff, and faculty of E. A. "Squatty" Lyons Elementary School in Houston on the occasion of the school's 10th anniversary; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for principal Connie Berger and Lyons Elementary School as an expression of high esteem by the Texas House of Representatives.
