H.R. No. 222


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A delegation of Waco residents has traveled to Austin in celebration of Waco Day at the State Capitol, and this occasion provides a fitting opportunity for the Texas House of Representatives to honor the history and contributions of this fine city; and WHEREAS, Waco is situated on the banks of the Bosque and Brazos rivers, and is blessed with an abundance of valuable resources, including natural springs and fertile soil; and WHEREAS, The McLennan County seat since 1850, Waco established itself as an important commercial hub through the construction of the Old Suspension Bridge in 1870; upon its completion, this monumental structure was the longest suspension bridge in the world and for several years was the only bridge across the Brazos River; and WHEREAS, The city is also a center for academics; home to McLennan Community College, Texas State Technical College, and Baylor University, the oldest university in the state and the largest Baptist university in the world, Waco makes an invaluable contribution to Texas by so ably supporting our next generation of leaders; and WHEREAS, Visitors to Waco can take advantage of the bountiful recreation opportunities, which center around Lake Waco, Lake Brazos, and numerous public parks, or reflect on days past by touring the Governor Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village, the Hippodrome Theatre, or the city's many historic homes; Waco's other attractions include the Cameron Park Zoo, the Dr Pepper Museum & Free Enterprise Institute, the Strecker Museum, the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, Nominated as an All-American City in 1996 for its healthy economy and quality of life, Waco is truly a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby recognize February 25, 2003, as Waco Day at the State Capitol and extend to the city's visiting residents sincere best wishes for a memorable and enjoyable trip to the capital city.
