R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Many proud residents of Zapata County are joining us today to celebrate Zapata County Day at the State Capitol; and WHEREAS, Established in 1858, Zapata County was named for local rancher Colonel Antonio Zapata, a respected military officer and federalist movement leader who founded the Republic of the Rio Grande; and WHEREAS, Zapata, the county seat, is located on the shores of the International Falcon Reservoir and has a desert climate that attracts a number of visitors during the winter months; and WHEREAS, With its record-breaking fishing, Falcon Lake plays host to several noteworthy angling tournaments and is well known for its first-rate bass and bow fishing; the area also is an ideal location for hunting a variety of large game, including deer and javelina; and WHEREAS, The first stop on the Rio Grande Valley Birding Trail, Zapata is home to numerous rare and interesting bird species, including the white-collared seedeater; and WHEREAS, Hang gliders and paragliders attend Flytec's World Record Encampment in Zapata hoping to use the record heat and winds common during the summer months to their advantage; and WHEREAS, Among Zapata's many recreational facilities are the San Ygnacio Historic District, Corralitos Ranch, and San Francisco Ranch; in addition, residents and visitors can enjoy the many annual celebrations offered in Zapata County, such as the county fair and parade in March; and WHEREAS, The residents of Zapata County are preserving their heritage while continuing to forge a bright future for themselves and their families, and it is indeed a great pleasure to honor them at this time; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby recognize February 27, 2003, as Zapata County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best wishes for an enjoyable and memorable visit.
