R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Officer Robert E. Lopez of the Weslaco Police Department exemplifies the virtues of integrity, dedication, and valor in his efforts to protect and serve his fellow Texans; and WHEREAS, Officer Lopez was wounded November 19, 2002, in the line of duty, and his injuries necessitated surgery and an extended period of recovery; a highly respected member of the force, which he joined in September 2000, he was awarded several days after the incident as the department's 2002 Officer of the Year, an honor for which he had been chosen before his injury; and WHEREAS, This accomplished officer graduated from Donna High School, where he studied law enforcement through the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America and belonged to the National Vocational Honor Society; he also participated in vocational competitions, winning first place at the regional and state levels and placing in the top 10 nationally representing Texas in the law enforcement category; and WHEREAS, Officer Lopez continued to excel at Coastal Bend College in Beeville, which he attended on a full scholarship and where he repeatedly made the dean's list en route to earning an associate degree in criminal justice and a master's certificate in law enforcement level III; and WHEREAS, Active in his community, Robert E. Lopez is a member of the Weslaco Municipal Police Union and a congregant of the Inspiration Ministries Church in the community of Alamo, where he volunteers his talents as a musician; and WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, he enjoys the love of his family, including his devoted wife, Miriam Lopez, and their children, Kayla and Sergio; his parents, Roberto and Julia Lopez; his brother, Joab Lopez; and his sister, Iris Rivera, and her husband, James Rivera, a fellow Weslaco police officer; and WHEREAS, During his tenure on the force, Robert E. Lopez has demonstrated loyalty, bravery, and devotion to duty consistent with the highest ideals of the law enforcement profession, and it is a privilege to join the many people he has aided in thanking him for his outstanding commitment to public service; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby commend Officer Robert E. Lopez for his steadfast dedication to the public welfare and extend to him heartfelt best wishes for success and fulfillment in the years ahead; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Officer Lopez as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
