H.R. No. 269
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Weslaco, Texas, has been named a 2002 winner of the
All-America City award, the oldest and most prestigious prize
accorded communities in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Given by the National Civic League, the award
salutes communities that bring together diverse perspectives and
segments of their population in order to address the most important
local needs; and
WHEREAS, Weslaco was one of 10 winners chosen from among 30
finalists for the 2002 designation; as part of its application, the
city submitted descriptions of three projects that had significant,
demonstrable results and promise to make a long-lasting
contribution to the city; and
WHEREAS, These projects include the Weslaco Neighborhood
Self Help Initiative, a program that brings city water and sewer
services to underserved areas; the Weslaco Transition Project,
which was instrumental in relocating the Caldwell/VSR from downtown
to the industrial zone and providing the Mid-Valley campus of South
Texas Community College with room for expansion; and Project READ,
a cooperative venture between the Weslaco ISD and the Weslaco
Public Library that was formed to improve reading skills; and
WHEREAS, In addition to fostering community pride and
cohesion, these projects can serve to instruct and inspire other
groups across the country as they seek ways of dealing with similar
issues; and
WHEREAS, Weslaco has a long-standing tradition of open,
inclusive, and visionary civic problem solving that will continue
to invigorate this forward-looking Texas town, and it is a pleasure
to join with its citizens in celebrating this newest tribute to
their community spirit; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate the citizens of Weslaco on their
community's designation as a 2002 All-America City and extend to
them sincere best wishes for good fortune in all their future
endeavors; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for prominent display in the city as an expression of high
regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
