R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On February 23, 2003, members of West University Baptist Church in Houston are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the church's founding; and WHEREAS, "From Generation to Generation" is the theme of this joyous event, which commemorates the rich history of the institution since its organization in 1928 by Nannie David, a missionary who had recently returned from Africa; and WHEREAS, Hundreds of current and former members of the congregation are gathering at the newly renovated church for anniversary festivities that include an alumni breakfast, performances by adult and children's choirs, and a photograph to be taken of all individuals in attendance; a particularly meaningful activity will be the placing of families' letters, photographs, and historical items into a time capsule to be opened at the church's centennial celebration in 2028; and WHEREAS, Since 1996 the congregation of West University Baptist Church has been led by the Reverend Dr. G. Barry Landrum; under his inspired guidance the church has continued to thrive, developing a strategic, long-range plan, increasing its budget by 50 percent, and instituting a contemporary worship service; and WHEREAS, For three-quarters of a century, the congregants of West University Baptist Church have demonstrated a steadfast commitment to their faith and to their community, and it is a pleasure to join with them in celebrating this notable milestone in their church's history; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. G. Barry Landrum and the members of West University Baptist Church on the occasion of the church's 75th anniversary and extend to them sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable celebration; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for West University Baptist Church as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
