R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Poncho Roberts was recently selected by The Huntsville Item as its 2002 Citizen of the Year; and WHEREAS, A deserving recipient of this annual award, Mr. Roberts retired from Southwestern Bell nearly 18 years ago, and since that time, he has established himself as a leader in the community, giving generously of his time and talents to benefit a host of worthwhile civic organizations; and WHEREAS, Mr. Roberts is a deacon and usher for University Heights Baptist Church and has served as president of the Sam Houston Club, adventure guide for the Sam Houston Visitors Center, and member of the board of directors for Old Town Theater; in addition, he is active with the Southwestern Bell Pioneers, the Huntsville Rotary Club, the chamber of commerce, the H.E.A.R.T.S. Museum, and the Sam Houston Raven Rangers; this inspirational individual is also a frequent volunteer at Huntsville Memorial Hospital, where he has logged more than 1,000 hours of service; and WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Roberts receives steadfast support from his beloved wife, Sugar, who is a dedicated civic leader in her own right; a greeter at the Sam Houston Visitors Center, she shares her time with the H.E.A.R.T.S. Museum and the Sam Houston Folk Festival, and she has committed more than 2,000 hours as a volunteer at Huntsville Memorial Hospital and served several terms as a member of its auxiliary board; Mr. and Mrs. Roberts regularly make appearances together at local churches, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, businesses, and service clubs, where they share their message of faith and humor to the enjoyment of many people; and WHEREAS, Mr. Roberts is being honored at a reception hosted by The Huntsville Item on February 20, 2003, and it is a pleasure to join in celebrating his myriad contributions to his community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Poncho Roberts on being named Citizen of the Year for 2002 by The Huntsville Item and extend to both Mr. and Mrs. Roberts sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Robertses as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
