R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, In March 2003 The Bastrop Advertiser is celebrating its 150th anniversary, and this is indeed an auspicious occasion for the newspaper and the community it serves; and WHEREAS, First published in 1853 by W. J. Cain, The Bastrop Advertiser is one of the state's oldest weekly newspapers, and its exceptional longevity is a result of the dedicated efforts of its many employees, past and present, who worked to make it the county's prime source of local news and opinion; and WHEREAS, Over the course of its colorful history, The Bastrop Advertiser has covered a diverse array of stories, publishing the memoirs of Cayton Erhard, a Bastrop man who fought in the war with Mexico, following the fortunes of local leaders who became prominent political figures at the state level, and reporting on the construction of Camp Swift; and WHEREAS, This noteworthy paper is being honored with a historical marker by the Texas Historical Commission, and the unveiling of the marker is only part of the many festivities related to the newspaper's 150th anniversary; and WHEREAS, For a century and a half The Bastrop Advertiser has provided its readers with a valuable source of news, information, and opinion, and the publication is an enduring aspect of one of Central Texas' oldest communities; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate The Bastrop Advertiser on the occasion of its sesquicentennial and extend to its management and staff best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for The Bastrop Advertiser as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
