H.R. No. 349R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The untimely passing of John William Overbey of Austin on December 24, 2002, at the age of 12, has brought a tragic loss to the family and many friends of this beloved young man, and it is most appropriate that we honor his memory at this time; and WHEREAS, An Austin native who was named in honor of both his grandfathers, he was born on March 27, 1990, to Kirk and Lisa Overbey, and his close-knit family includes his older sister, Emily; and WHEREAS, John attended St. Theresa's Catholic School through third grade, was a student at St. Louis Catholic School, where he was a favorite among his seventh-grade classmates, and served his fellow congregants of St. Louis Catholic Church as an altar server; and WHEREAS, A former Cub Scout, this outstanding young Texan had just earned his Star Rank as a member of Boy Scouts; John especially enjoyed hiking, camping, and fishing with his father and was happily anticipating a winter scouting campout as well as a summer camping trip; while vacationing with his family recently, he had fulfilled a longtime dream by experiencing the sport of snowboarding; and WHEREAS, This sensitive young man delighted his family and friends with his kind heart, sweet spirit, and a joyful sense of humor that kept everyone around him laughing; and WHEREAS, John maintained a creative writing journal, an idea that drew inspiration from J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, and his plans for the future included a desire to become a writer; and WHEREAS, Although it is immeasurably painful to say good-bye to one so young and full of promise, it is fitting to remember that while John's time here was all too brief, his presence profoundly affected all those whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby honor the memory of John William Overbey and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his parents, Kirk and Lisa Overbey; to his sister, Emily Overbey; to his grandparents, John and Susan Overbey, Lorna Overbey, and William and Darrylin Hudson; to his uncles, Ronald and Darryl Hudson; to his aunts, Kathy and Dorothy Overbey; to his cousin, William Hudson; and to the other relatives and many friends of this cherished young man; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of John William Overbey.
