H.R. No. 374


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Team Everest '03 is a unique and historic expedition designed not only to conquer the world's highest mountain but also to change the way individuals with disabilities are perceived; and WHEREAS, Organized by the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities (CTD), the project is the result of an 18-month campaign and will culminate in the spring of 2003 with the actual ascent of Mt. Everest; and WHEREAS, Texan Gary Guller will lead the 15-member Challenge Trek team, composed of individuals with varying disabilities, to the Mt. Everest base camp at 17,500 feet; he then plans to continue up the mountain in an attempt to become the first single-armed person ever to scale the perilous peak to its topmost point; and WHEREAS, For its excellence in promoting the potential of people with disabilities, CTD has been named the recipient of the 2003 Barbara Jordan Media Award by the Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities; and WHEREAS, The dedicated participants involved in Team Everest ' 03 understand the many physical challenges and hardships that must be overcome to successfully scale Mt. Everest; they are also acutely aware that perceptions about disabled people can be equally difficult to surmount, and the team's goal of making a positive difference in addressing that problem is truly a meaningful ambition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby recognize March 4, 2003, as Team Everest '03 Day at the State Capitol and extend to all those associated with this worthy project sincere best wishes for a successful ascent; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Team Everest '03 as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
