R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, In conjunction with Black History Month, the San
Antonio Express-News has recognized Joyce D. Sowells of the Alamo
City as an Unsung Hero for her many contributions to the community;
and
WHEREAS, A longtime dance instructor for African-American
debutantes, Ms. Sowells teaches valuable skills such as etiquette,
time management, poise, and self-assurance; for more than 40
years, this admirable woman has been developing the confidence of
young black women across San Antonio; and
WHEREAS, In addition to her work with debutantes, Ms. Sowells
has directed the YMCA's Y Teen program, served as a public school
instructor and principal, and worked with President Lyndon
Johnson's poverty program; she has campaigned for better racial
understanding in countless ways; and
WHEREAS, Deeply committed to her community, Ms. Sowells has
made a positive and lasting difference in the lives of many, and she
truly deserves to be recognized as a hero; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Joyce D. Sowells of San Antonio on
being named an Unsung Hero by the San Antonio Express-News and
commend her for her outstanding contributions to her community;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Ms. Sowells as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
