H.R. No. 381R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, In conjunction with Black History Month, the San Antonio Express-News has recognized Barbara Gervin Hawkins, a resident of the Alamo City, as an Unsung Hero; and WHEREAS, Ms. Hawkins directs a busy schedule of activities at the George Gervin Youth Center started by her brother, former San Antonio Spurs player George "The Iceman" Gervin, at the close of his basketball career; and WHEREAS, The center offers training and educational opportunities for area youth, and to that end, Ms. Hawkins fulfills a pivotal role in the lives of its myriad clients; depending upon the particular needs of each individual, she may help with job searches or encourage former students to return to high school classes, or she may be sought for emotional support by a pregnant teen who needs someone to care; and WHEREAS, This compassionate, determined woman has helped improve the quality of life for countless residents of San Antonio and her service to others is an inspiration to all those who know of her; and WHEREAS, Barbara Hawkins truly makes a difference through her tireless dedication to her fellow Texans, and she is indeed deserving of legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby commend Barbara Gervin Hawkins for her commitment to her fellow Texans and congratulate her on being named an Unsung Hero; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Hawkins as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
