R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, In conjunction with Black History Month, the San Antonio Express-News has recognized John Etta Slaughter, a resident of the Alamo City, as an Unsung Hero; and WHEREAS, Ms. Slaughter grew up in a home where education was highly prized and college attendance was advocated for each of the family's children; she went on to receive a master's degree in American history at Howard University in Washington, D.C., before she returned to Texas; and WHEREAS, This dedicated teacher embarked on her outstanding career in education with a part-time position at St. Philip's College, after which she joined the San Antonio Independent School District; she later returned to St. Philip's, where for 22 years she has shared her enthusiasm for American history with her students; and WHEREAS, Chair of St. Philip's social science department, Ms. Slaughter is also an active participant in myriad worthy organizations, including the NAACP; she is a strong advocate of parents' involvement in all phases of their children's lives and of continuing efforts to overcome discrimination in our society; and WHEREAS, John Etta Slaughter has proven that one woman can make a difference through her tireless dedication to her fellow Texans, and she is indeed deserving of legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby commend John Etta Slaughter for her deep commitment to the youth of Texas and congratulate her on being named an Unsung Hero; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Slaughter as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
