R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The year 2003 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Boerne Volunteer Fire Department, and this centennial is indeed a joyous milestone; and WHEREAS, Established on January 5, 1903, the department was organized by members of several pioneer families in the area; the first officers were F. W. Homer, chief; George Zoeller, assistant chief; Bruno Wendler, secretary; and H. J. Grahm, treasurer; and WHEREAS, Soon after its founding, the fire company placed an order for a fire bell, larger than the one that had been donated by a local hardware company, ordered a hook and ladder wagon, to be built by a Mr. Harz of Boerne, and bought 26 fire buckets; within a year it had acquired a fire engine and erected a station house at the site of the King and King lumber company; and WHEREAS, Today, more than 40 dedicated men and women continue the proud tradition of serving their community as part of the Boerne Volunteer Fire Department, 10 as staff members and over 30 as volunteer firefighters; the current leadership includes Mike Fincke, president; Jeffery Fincke, chief; Randy Bergmann and Mark Finch, assistant chiefs; Gerald Neill, Billy Knupp, and Adam Zenner, captains; Steve Simon, secretary; Ben Schoch, treasurer; and Andrew Frantzen, timekeeper; and WHEREAS, The department sponsors and participates in numerous activities that raise funds for its operations--events such as dances, parades, golf tournaments, fish fries, and masquerade balls; with generous support from the residents of Boerne and surrounding communities, it maintains more than 10 fire-fighting trucks, including a new 100-foot ladder truck, and additional emergency equipment; and WHEREAS, Throughout its admirable history, the Boerne Volunteer Fire Department has been a dependable source of protection and peace of mind for countless Texans, and it is a pleasure to join in celebrating its first century of faithful service; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Boerne Volunteer Fire Department and extend to all associated with the department heartfelt best wishes for continued success.
