H.R. No. 440
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, For the eighth consecutive year, students from
Lindale High School are competing at the University Interscholastic
League Cross-Examination Meet, and it is a pleasure to honor those
students who have earned the right to participate in the 2002-2003
event at The University of Texas at Austin; and
WHEREAS, Under the capable and sure-handed guidance of team
sponsor Janice Caldwell, the Lindale High School debate team is
once again represented at the UIL meet; this year's team includes
first-place qualifiers Cassi Wilbur and Brittany Allen and
second-place qualifiers Nathan Gaines and Lauren Dibby; and
WHEREAS, These exemplary students will match wits with their
peers while debating the issue of public health services for mental
health care in the United States; they have done exhaustive
research on this topic and will employ their analytical and
oratorical skills in an effort to best their fellow competitors and
capture the coveted state championship; and
WHEREAS, Competitive debate fosters the development of
research and analytical skills and problem-solving abilities;
debate is a fundamental component of democratic societies, and
competitions such as the Cross-Examination Meet promote the defense
of worthy ideas and the attack of invalid or specious notions; and
WHEREAS, Lindale High School has been awarded exemplary
school status by the Texas Education Agency, and these students are
living proof of the exciting academic opportunities offered by this
noteworthy school; the students, faculty, and staff of Lindale High
School can take pride in the knowledge that their school is well
represented by these commendable students, whose academic
accomplishments are indeed praiseworthy; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby commend Cassi Wilbur, Brittany Allen, Nathan
Gaines, and Lauren Dibby, and their sponsor, Janice Caldwell, for
their outstanding achievements in the field of competitive debate
and extend to them best wishes for success in this year's meet; and,
be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for these students and their sponsor as an expression of
high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
