H.R. No. 443


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Midland's Sharla Hotchkiss was deservedly honored as the recipient of the 2001 Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson Award by Keep America Beautiful for her myriad contributions to conserving our state's natural resources and preserving its beauty; and WHEREAS, Named executive director of Keep Midland Beautiful in 1986, this remarkable woman expanded partnerships to include 143 civic organizations and 120 businesses and schools; she also gave nearly 200 presentations and helped to maintain a phenomenal 95 percent litter reduction rate; and WHEREAS, To that end Ms. Hotchkiss worked closely with Midland's Sanitation Department, designing a recycling brochure that was presented to 1,200 area businesses; the winner of two Governor's Community Achievement awards for Keep Midland Beautiful's efforts to promote litter prevention and develop local recycling programs, Ms. Hotchkiss was also a corecipient of the Texas League of Women Voters' Excellence in Environmental Awareness Award for her efforts to instruct building managers and janitorial staffs on methods for establishing recycling programs; and WHEREAS, Appointed by the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission to the Pollution Prevention Oversight Committee for state-mandated programs, she has further distinguished herself on the Keep Texas Beautiful Board of Directors for more than a decade; in addition, Ms. Hotchkiss is a former president of Keep Texas Beautiful and has excelled in her role as one of that organization's 10 regional governors; and WHEREAS, The hard work and dedication of Sharla Hotchkiss have earned her immeasurable respect among her friends and colleagues in the Midland community and throughout the Lone Star State; she has helped to preserve and enhance the beauty of Texas for the enjoyment of this and future generations, and it is a privilege to pay tribute to her and to recognize her many accomplishments; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Sharla Hotchkiss on her receipt of the 2001 Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson Award and commend her for her outstanding work in support of the environment; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Hotchkiss as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
