                                                                  H.R. No. 471


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The people of Kerrville and Kerr County lost a highly esteemed civic leader with the passing of Charles H. Johnston, Jr., on January 7, 2002, at the age of 88; and WHEREAS, Born on November 20, 1913, in Kerrville, he was a lifelong resident of the city; he graduated from Tivy High School, Schreiner University, and The University of Texas at Austin; he played football in high school and college and remained an avid fan of the game; and WHEREAS, Mr. Johnston served his country with distinction as a member of the United States Navy during World War II; following his military service, he returned to his hometown and the Peterson Auto Company, where he became general manager; he bought the car dealership in 1962 and operated the company for the next decade until selling it in 1973; and WHEREAS, His professional and civic involvement included membership on the boards of the Texas Automobile Dealers Association, Kerrville Rotary Club, Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital, Hal and Charlie Peterson Foundation, Charles Schreiner Bank, and Hill Country Savings and Loan; in addition, he was a trustee with the Kerrville Independent School District and Schreiner University and served the congregation of First Presbyterian Church of Kerrville as an elder for many years; and WHEREAS, In recognition of his deep commitment to his community, Mr. Johnston was accorded many honors, including a 1990 Co-Distinguished Alumnus Award from Schreiner University; moreover, he was named Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 1976 by the Kerr County Chamber of Commerce and Texas Quality Dealer of 1970 by the Texas Automobile Dealers Association; and WHEREAS, Married to the former Josephine Fawcett in 1936, Mr. Johnston enjoyed a happy and fulfilling relationship with his wife until her passing in 1996; he took great pride in his family, including a daughter and son-in-law, a grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews who were like his own children; and WHEREAS, The life of Charles H. Johnston, Jr., has been an immeasurable blessing to his family, his friends, and the citizens of Kerr County, and his spirit will continue to light the hearts of all who knew and loved him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Charles H. Johnston, Jr., and extend sincere sympathy to his daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and Alton Rhoden; to his grandson, Charles Jay Rhoden; to his sisters-in-law, Norma Fawcett, Ethel Fawcett, and Cornelia Stehling; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Charles H.
