R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Lee County, a home to German and Wendish settlers in the mid-19th century, will host the 11th Annual State Noodle Cook-off in Giddings on May 11, 2003, in conjunction with its county fair; and WHEREAS, The cook-off pays tribute to the fascinating cultural and culinary heritage of Central Texas, which during the 19th century welcomed the largest single group of Wendish immigrants ever to leave Europe; the Wends' signature dish consists of Wendish noodles, traditionally made with eggs and flour and cooked in rich, flavorful broth; and WHEREAS, Noodle experts from around the state come to the cook-off to demonstrate their remarkable creativity and talent in the preparation of this traditional old-world staple, and their delicious creations will certainly delight even the most discerning palate; and WHEREAS, The Lee County Fair and State Noodle Cook-off also feature traditional Wendish and German entertainment, including music and dancing, and provide visitors with a glimpse inside the folklore and customs that have enriched the lives of Central Texans for 150 years; and WHEREAS, For more than a decade, these festive events have offered an opportunity for many citizens to experience the mosaic canvass of Texas culture, enjoy good food, and join together in celebration of our state's colorful history; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby recognize the 2003 Lee County Fair and State Noodle Cook-off and extend special commendation to the organizers, volunteers, and participants of this joyful occasion.
