R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A 96th birthday is truly cause for a celebration,
and on April 30, 2003, Jewel Winder of Nacogdoches is marking this
special occasion in her life; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Winder exemplifies the strength and
perseverance of the pioneer women who helped Texas become the
inspiring symbol of independence and self-sufficiency that its
citizens look to with pride; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her childhood, she crossed the state with
her family in a covered wagon, picking cotton on farms from the
Piney Woods of East Texas to the plains of West Texas; as a young
wife and mother, she lived in the sawmill town of Caro, near
Nacogdoches, and she continues to live on land she and her late
husband, Press Winder, bought in 1925; and
WHEREAS, This lovely lady is the matriarch of a close-knit
family that has grown to include 5 children, Mavis Clifton, Sue
Sanders, and Bob, Rho, and John Winder, 9 grandchildren, and 16
great-grandchildren, all of whom she invites to her home for
holiday celebrations; further, she has been a devoted sister to 10
siblings and a beloved aunt to her nieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Winder is a highly respected member of her
community, where she is widely known for her many kindnesses and her
neighborly manner to everyone; her family and many friends take
much delight in Mrs. Winder's zest for life, which has included a
journey to Mexico at age 85 and a helicopter ride at age 90; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her lifetime, Jewel Winder has
continually demonstrated a selfless commitment to others, and her
birthday provides a fitting opportunity to recognize her for the
positive impact she has had on the countless individuals whose
lives she has touched; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Jewel Winder on the joyous occasion
of her 96th birthday and extend to her heartfelt wishes for
continued happiness; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mrs. Winder as an expression of high regard by the
House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature.
