R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Canyon High School Lady Eagles basketball team
defeated the Kountze High School Lions to win the UIL Conference 3A
State Championship on March 1, 2003, and this remarkable team
accomplishment is truly deserving of legislative recognition; and
WHEREAS, The Lady Eagles soared to the school's 10th state
championship with an impressive 32-1 record that included a sweep
of the district, regional, and state playoffs; this outstanding
season of success earned the team national recognition as well as
the respect and admiration of the Canyon community; and
WHEREAS, Schooled in the fundamentals by longtime coach Joe
Lombard and assistant coaches Johnny Hampton and Kurt Richardson,
the Lady Eagles epitomized teamwork and good sportsmanship
throughout their championship season; Coach Lombard has
established a well-known reputation for winning during his 28 years
in coaching, compiling an amazing 844-77 career record; and
WHEREAS, Led by championship game MVP Kalee Carey and
all-tournament honorees Brooke Baughman and Jordan Hampton, the
team also includes Dixie Bell, Catherine McMenamy, Kristy Keeling,
Chelsie Friemel, Sierra Wilcox, Jennifer Paetzold, Kacee Carey,
Jessica Hartman, and Elyse Tinsley; additionally, team manager Joli
Barrett contributed to the team's success; and
WHEREAS, Winning a state championship is a truly memorable
event for players, coaches, parents, and fans, and this momentous
victory will long be cherished by those individuals who contributed
to the Lady Eagles 2002-2003 season; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate the members of the Canyon High
School Lady Eagles basketball team on winning the 2003 UIL
Conference 3A State Championship and extend best wishes to all
those associated with the team; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
