R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Jenkins and Virginia Garrett have been selected to receive the 2003 Award of Excellence in Preserving History presented by the Texas Historical Commission; and WHEREAS, Nominated for the award by Ron Tyler, director of the Texas State Historical Association, Mr. and Mrs. Garrett are being given this accolade for their myriad contributions to the preservation and study of Texas history; and WHEREAS, For many decades, the Garretts have actively participated in various historical organizations, including the Tarrant County Historical Commission, Tarrant County Historical Society, Philip Lee Phillips Society, Philosophical Society of Texas, and Texas State Historical Association, which Mr. Garrett has led as president; in addition, Mr. Garrett founded the Collector's Institute and was instrumental in the development of the New Handbook of Texas; and WHEREAS, They have greatly supported the Cartographic History Center at The University of Texas at Arlington as key architects of the Texas Map Society and are primary benefactors of the special collections division of The University of Texas at Arlington Library, which houses the Jenkins Garrett Library and Virginia Garrett Map Collection; moreover, they sponsor the biannual Virginia Garrett Lecture in the History of Cartography at The University of Texas at Arlington; and WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Garrett have devoted their lives to a noble pursuit, and their work in the collection, preservation, and collation of historical resources will have untold benefits for future generations; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby honor Jenkins and Virginia Garrett on their most deserving receipt of the 2003 Award of Excellence in Preserving History from the Texas Historical Commission; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Garrett as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
