R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Clyde Porter is one of the premier public architects in Dallas and has provided architectural leadership for four of the largest public organizations in Dallas and in the nation; and WHEREAS, Mr. Porter has held prominent positions with Dallas Area Rapid Transit, the Dallas Community College District, the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; he has influenced the design and construction of projects totaling more than $5 billion; and WHEREAS, The first African-American architect to be employed by the Dallas County Community College District, he is the assistant vice chancellor/district architect and leads design and construction projects for 10 campus locations; during his 15-year tenure with the district, he has been responsible for more than $180 million in architectural and construction projects, including several award-winning designs; and WHEREAS, Mr. Porter was also the first African-American architect at Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), for which he established the architectural criteria for the barrel vault transit center design that has been implemented by DART and employed throughout its transit program; and WHEREAS, Mr. Porter completed architectural projects throughout the nation for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) and demonstrated his vision and advocacy for the architect's role by establishing a program to promote the registration of architects in service at the AAFES; and WHEREAS, Mr. Porter is a role model who inspires young men and women to consider architecture as a career choice, actively recruits students for schools of architecture throughout Texas, and helps to draw minority students from across the state into architecture programs; and WHEREAS, Through leadership and collaboration with public officials and business owners, Mr. Porter has demonstrated an ability to produce innovative design and cost-effective construction with integrity; he is a leader in the architectural profession and he is truly worthy of special recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby recognize Clyde Porter for his many achievements in the field of architecture and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success in all his endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Porter as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
