R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Through his many years in public office and numerous
community posts, the Honorable Dudley Harrison of Terrell County
has forged an exceptional record of public service; and
WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Terrell County, Mr. Harrison
was born into a pioneer ranching family and has carried on its
ranching tradition for more than half a century; for a number of
decades he also owned a Texaco station and Ford/Mercury dealership
in the county seat of Sanderson; and
WHEREAS, In 1982, with a long history of community
involvement to his credit, he campaigned successfully for a seat in
the Texas House of Representatives, winning the first of four
consecutive terms; while in the legislature, Mr. Harrison gained
recognition as the house expert on water rights and chaired for two
terms the Agriculture and Livestock Committee; he also served on
the County Affairs, State Affairs, and Appropriations committees,
the Task Force for Tort Law Reform, and the Governor's Task Force on
Waste Management for the State of Texas; and
WHEREAS, From 1992 through 2002, this distinguished Texan
served as county judge of Terrell County; determined to help his
area develop the foundation for a new, 21st-century economy, he was
instrumental in advancing a number of significant projects,
including a major regional workshop on nature tourism and
renovation to Sanderson's infrastructure; convinced that rural
communities need to enter the digital age, he also played a crucial
role in securing a substantial grant to bring high-speed Internet
access to the county seat; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, Mr. Harrison has held leadership
positions with the Permian Basin Regional Planning Council, Rural
Communities, Inc., West Texas Centers for MHMR, Chihuahuan Desert
Research Institute, Rio Grande-Pecos River Soil and Water
Conservation District, and Big Bend Park and Rio Grande Wild and
Scenic River Planning Group; moreover, he is a lifetime director of
the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association, a former director of
the Sanderson State Bank, and an elder at the First Presbyterian
Church of Sanderson; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Harrison and his wife of more than 50 years, the
former Doris Cooke, have proudly watched their family grow to
include four children, seven grandchildren, and one
great-grandchild; and
WHEREAS, Dudley Harrison has devoted a lifetime to building a
brighter future for the people of Texas, and his tireless efforts
and unwavering integrity have earned him the deep affection and
appreciation of countless fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby commend the Honorable Dudley Harrison for his
exemplary public service and extend to him sincere gratitude for
his years of dedicated civic leadership; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Harrison as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
