R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is pleased to
welcome the fine citizens from San Antonio who have journeyed to
Austin April 1, 2003, in recognition of San Antonio Legislative Day
at the State Capitol; and
WHEREAS, San Antonio's history can be traced back to 1691,
when a band of Spanish explorers and missionaries came upon a river
that, because it was the feast day of St. Anthony, they named "San
Antonio"; and
WHEREAS, The city itself was founded in 1718 by Father
Antonio Olivares when he established Mission San Antonio de Valero,
which became permanently etched in the annals of history; the
Alamo, as the mission became known, served as a fort in 1836 when
189 defenders held off some 4,000 Mexican troops for 13 days; and
WHEREAS, The cry "Remember the Alamo" became the rallying
point of the Texas Revolution against Mexico, and today the
historic mission is a shrine and museum, recognized as the cradle of
Texas liberty; and
WHEREAS, San Antonio has retained its sense of history and
tradition, while making room for cosmopolitan progress; it is a
crossroads where the rich sounds and flavors of Native America, Old
Mexico, Germany, the Wild West, and the Deep South mingle; and
WHEREAS, The city has a proud military heritage, serving as
home to Fort Sam Houston, the former Kelly Air Force Base, Lackland
Air Force Base, and Brooks City-Base; and
WHEREAS, Recent years have brought remarkable economic
development to San Antonio because of the city's skilled workforce,
excellent institutions of public and higher education, and
flourishing industries of biomedical sciences, health care,
tourism, informational technology and security, aviation,
aerospace, and telecommunications; and
WHEREAS, Nearly eight million visitors each year delight in
the discovery of San Antonio's charms, including the Alamo, La
Villita, San Fernando Cathedral, the San Antonio Missions Trail,
the McNay Art Museum, the San Antonio Museum of Art, and the famed
Paseo del Rio, better known as "The Riverwalk"; this vibrant city is
also home to many other popular tourist attractions such as Six
Flags Fiesta Texas, Sea World, and the San Antonio Zoo, ranked as
one of the best in the country; and
WHEREAS, With over 300 days of sunshine annually, San Antonio
provides visitors with a multitude of outdoor sports, recreation,
and festive activities; the biggest party of the year is held April
19-27, 2003, as the city celebrates Fiesta San Antonio with a
nine-day extravaganza that celebrates the rich and diverse heritage
of the city; and
WHEREAS, Frank Tolbert, a noted Texas historian and
journalist, once said, "Every Texan has two homes, his own and San
Antonio"; a vibrant city of distinct and beautiful multicultural
heritage, friendly and welcoming residents, and warm hospitality,
San Antonio is indeed a second home for all citizens of the Lone
Star State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby recognize April 1, 2003, as San Antonio
Legislative Day at the State Capitol and extend sincere best wishes
to the visitors from San Antonio for an enjoyable and memorable
visit.
