R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Since 1948, the members of Beta Sigma Phi have recognized women for their accomplishments and their contributions to the community, and they will continue this tradition on March 23 when they name Evelyn Pitts the 2003 First Lady of Waxahachie; and WHEREAS, The wife of State Representative Jim Pitts and a native of Waxahachie, Mrs. Pitts is following in the footsteps of her mother, Frances Eastham, and grandmother, Lena Peters, both of whom also received the special honor of being named First Lady of Waxahachie; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Pitts graduated from Waxahachie High School and earned a bachelor's degree in business from Southern Methodist University; she married Jim Pitts, a fellow SMU student whom she met in a bowling class, and the couple settled in Waxahachie in 1971 to raise their family; and WHEREAS, Long dedicated to serving her community, she has held leadership positions on the Baylor/Ellis County Hospital Board of Directors, the Waxahachie Foundation, the HOPE Clinic Board of Directors, and the Ellis County Museum Board, as well as with numerous other organizations; she is a member of the Ellis County Republican Women and the Texas Legislative Wives Club and will chair the 2003 Easter Egg Hunt to be held at the Governor's Mansion; and WHEREAS, The proud mother of three children, Duffy, Ashley, and Ryan, she has also devoted much time to supporting her children and the youth of her community in their educational and extracurricular activities; she has participated in parent-teacher organizations and served as a room mother, a team sponsor for pee-wee football cheerleaders, and an active member of the Pi Beta Phi and SMU mothers' clubs; and WHEREAS, Despite her demanding schedule as a parent, wife, and community leader, this tireless individual still finds time for her own interests, and she is a member of the Heirloom Club, the Friday Book Club, and the Gardener's Limited Garden Club; and WHEREAS, For many years Evelyn Pitts has contributed her vision, time, and talents to the betterment of her community, and she may reflect with pride on the significant role she has played in making her hometown such a wonderful place to live; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby commend Evelyn Pitts on her outstanding record of community service and congratulate her on her selection as First Lady of Waxahachie for 2003; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Pitts as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
