R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Judy Shepard, who experienced a shattering loss when
her beloved son, Matthew, became the victim of a hate crime, is
bringing her message of acceptance and civil rights to The
University of Texas on April 21, 2003, when she makes an address at
the LBJ Auditorium; and
WHEREAS, The "Legacy of Matthew Shepard" national speaking
program keeps alive the memory of Matthew Shepard's gentle spirit
and the inevitable tragic consequences of ignorance and bigotry;
the noble and selfless work of Mrs. Shepard and the Matthew Shepard
Foundation aids victims of hate crimes or other forms of
discrimination in securing resources essential to obtaining needed
assistance; and
WHEREAS, The University of Texas is hosting the presentation
by Mrs. Shepard in furtherance of her mission to educate and replace
hate with understanding, acceptance, and compassion; and
WHEREAS, The unimaginable grief that ensues from the loss of
a child has moved this courageous woman to wage an implacable and
inspiring campaign to end the incomprehensible intolerance that
rends the lives of family and friends; and
WHEREAS, The efforts of Mrs. Shepard serve to remind us that
diversity must not divide us; rather, society must weave a glorious
quilt patterned by the unique and special attributes of our
humanity; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby honor Judy Shepard for her commitment to
educating the public on the important issue of human rights as she
helps to promote respect and dignity for all; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
presented to Mrs. Shepard as an expression of highest regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
