R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Gary F. Shelton is retiring after a distinguished tenure with The University of Texas at Austin as administrative officer at The Texas Union, and the occasion provides a fitting opportunity to reflect on his outstanding career; and WHEREAS, A native of Dallas, Mr. Shelton graduated from The University of Texas in 1960 with majors in anthropology, biology, and chemistry; he pursued his graduate studies at the university, assuming in 1963 a research manager position in the school's division of biological sciences, where he served for seven years coordinating and managing projects made possible by grants from the National Institutes of Health; and WHEREAS, He moved on to become division coordinator and senior management information specialist at Southwest Educational Development Laboratory in Austin for 4-1/2 years before returning to employment with UT as the administrative officer at The Texas Union in 1975; and WHEREAS, Mr. Shelton's many accomplishments over the last 28 years include developing operational guidelines and bid procedures for the renovation and restoration of The Texas Union and for the establishment of The Texas Union MicroCenter; in addition, he has served as an advisor to The Texas Union Management Committee, a group recognized for initiating and providing a wide range of services for students, faculty, and staff; and WHEREAS, Known for his deep appreciation for the architecture and traditions of the Texas Union building, he is responsible for an extremely popular guided tour of the Union and has been fiercely protective of all items of historical significance; and WHEREAS, Mr. Shelton is a man of integrity, diligence, and loyalty, and it is a pleasure to join in honoring his service to The Texas Union and The University of Texas at Austin as he embarks on the next chapter of his life; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby commend Gary F. Shelton on his exemplary career with The University of Texas and extend to him sincere best wishes for a fulfilling and rewarding retirement; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Shelton as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
