R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to
recognize Dr. Johann Deisenhofer, regental professor of
biochemistry and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at
The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, for
his many contributions to medical research and education; and
WHEREAS, A recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1988,
Dr. Deisenhofer used X-rays on crystals of proteins to reveal the
process of photosynthesis, which is described by the Royal Swedish
Academy of Sciences as the most important chemical reaction on
Earth; and
WHEREAS, This invaluable discovery led to a more accurate
understanding of the structure of proteins essential to life,
benefiting the field of medicine and patients throughout the world;
and
WHEREAS, A dedicated professor and research leader at
Southwestern Medical Center for 15 years, Dr. Deisenhofer has
contributed to a greater understanding of medical science and to
the teaching of science in Texas; and
WHEREAS, The people of the State of Texas are fortunate to
have such a gifted scientist as Dr. Deisenhofer as a part of The
University of Texas System during the past 15 years; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby honor Dr. Johann Deisenhofer for his important
contributions to medical and scientific education and to the
furtherance of biomedical understanding and discovery and extend to
him best wishes for success in his future endeavors; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Dr. Deisenhofer as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
