R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to
recognize Dr. Alfred G. Gilman, regental professor and chairman of
pharmacology at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
at Dallas, for his many contributions to medicine and medical
education; and
WHEREAS, A recipient of the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1994,
Dr. Gilman discovered, characterized, and purified a set of guanine
nucleotide-binding regulatory proteins termed "G proteins"; and
WHEREAS, This invaluable discovery revealed how cells
communicate to control the most fundamental processes in the human
body and opened the way for the development of new therapies for
many major diseases, benefiting the field of medicine and patients
throughout the world; and
WHEREAS, A dedicated professor and research leader at
Southwestern Medical Center for more than two decades, Dr. Gilman
has contributed to a greater understanding of medical science and
to the teaching of science in Texas; and
WHEREAS, The people of the State of Texas are fortunate to
have such a gifted scientist as Dr. Gilman as a part of The
University of Texas System during the past 22 years; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby honor Dr. Alfred G. Gilman for his important
contributions to medical and scientific education and to the
furtherance of biomedical understanding and discovery and extend to
him best wishes for success in his future endeavors; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Dr. Gilman as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
