R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On March 11, 2003, Seventeen students from Abilene
Christian University successfully finished a long-distance relay
bike ride for charity; and
WHEREAS, These members of Gamma Sigma Phi, a local collegiate
fraternity established in 1968 as Kinsmen, spent their spring break
week completing a bike ride relay from Abilene to Pepperdine
University in Malibu, California; and
WHEREAS, The seventeen men rode through the plains, desert,
and mountains of the Southwestern Region of the United States
relay-style to finish the 1,400-mile ride in three-and-one-half
days from noon on Friday, March 7, to 1 A.M. on Tuesday, March 11,
2003; and
WHEREAS, The purpose of the bike ride was to raise money for
Habitat for Humanity to pay for a house in Abilene that the
seventeen members had assisted in building; the total dollar amount
raised through donations and sponsors from the bike ride was about
$5,000; and
WHEREAS, The members that accomplished this feat and deserve
recognition are Jeremy Brewer, Mark Bruner, Andrew Culp, Mark
Gibson, David Gilly, Jason Gipson, Ben Grant, Eric Hise, Chris
Jacobs, Darin Love, Ian McDonald, Dustin McWilliams, Jonathan
Moreland, John Mark Moudy, Jeffrey Rasco, Hayden Reid, and David
Shaw; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby honor seventeen members of Gamma Sigma Phi from Abilene
Christian University for their success in completing the 1,400-mile
charitable bike ride to California benefitting Habitat for
Humanity; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the fraternity as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
