R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson has designated April 2003 as Donate Life Month to heighten awareness of the critical need for organ donations across this nation; and WHEREAS, In 2002 alone, more than 6,000 Americans, including 430 Texans, died while awaiting organ donations, and this year over 5,200 residents of the Lone Star State and 80,000 people nationwide are waiting for life-saving donations; and WHEREAS, Through its Donate Life campaign, the Texas Transplantation Society seeks to promote knowledge of the vital need for organ, tissue, marrow, and blood donation in our state; to that end, the organization has invited transplant physicians, surgeons, nurses, recipients, organ donors, and family members of donors to visit the State Capitol on this day to draw attention to this serious health issue; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby recognize April 15, 2003, as Transplant Day at the State Capitol and commend the Texas Transplantation Society and its supporters for their significant efforts to highlight the urgent need for organ donations in Texas; and, be it further RESOLVED, That the house of representatives also commend all those compassionate Texans who have chosen to share the gift of life with others as organ donors and encourage all Texans to consider making this important choice in behalf of their fellow citizens.
